Nancy G. Brinker started Susan G. Komen in memory of her sister. The organization is based on a promise between two sisters to save lives and end breast cancer forever. There are over 100 local affiliates of Susan G. Komen that are operating as independent 501c3 organizations powering the promise the organization was founded on. Click here for a list of Komen affiliates.

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen®organization and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer.

It’s the Komen Affiliate Network that has enabled the organization to expand its reach and impact throughout the U.S. and abroad. More than 110 affiliates across the U.S. and 3 internationally based affiliates each operate as independent 501c3 organizations working every day to address the breast health needs of their communities. Together, the Komen affiliate network has invested more than $2.6 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 30 countries. Our efforts have helped reduce death rates from breast cancer by 34 percent since 1990; and has helped improve five-year survival rates for early stage cancers from 74 to 99 percent. And we won’t stop until our promise is fulfilled.

Susan G. Komen Austin strives to provide resources, educational materials, breast cancer awareness and outreach programs to the entire community. If you would like to request a speaker for a health fair or breast cancer event, need materials for an employee wellness event, or if you just want more information about breast cancer to learn more about your risk, we are here to help.

If you need educational material or a speaker for an event please visit our Request Educational Materials page.

Did you know that every major advance in the fight against breast cancer has been touched by Susan G. Komen®? Komen has been funding research since 1982 and have provided more money for breast cancer research and community health programs than any entity besides the U.S. government. Komen’s goal is to “energize science to find the cures” and as of October 2014, we have invested over $847 million into doing just that! Learn more about Komen’s research grant recipients and what work is being done right here in Texas.

Komen’s commitment to supporting life-saving research has never been stronger. Komen continues its important new focus on research that will speed the translation of discoveries into reductions in breast cancer mortality and/or incidence within the next decade and on addressing disparities in breast cancer across populations.

Twenty-five percent from each Affiliate supports the Komen Research, Evaluation and Scientific Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.
